With consummate mastery, in fourteen fugues and four canons Bach's final keyboard cycle develops the combinatory possibilities of a single theme. But the composer died in July 1750, leaving the last fugue unfinished and the proofs for an edition underway. The altered order of the posthumous edition  masked the  identity of The Art of Fugue as a performance cycle and has  conditioned posterity's view of the work as an anthology of contrapuntal techniques. 

Martha Cook undertakes a  comparison of the sources  and places the work  in its philosophical context, the turning of pre-Enlightenment Germany towards  the Aufklärung.  She explores  contemporary  documents to discover the «Â secrets » of musical invention, and delivers a surprising conclusion  The Art of Fugue was inspired by a passage from the Gospel of Luke. Revealing the prosodic and allegorical correspondences between the music and its underlying text, the author invites us to rediscover The Art of Fugue, not as a book of recipes for composing, but  as a profoundly moving moral autobiography. Postulating  Bach's attachment to the theology of the cross as enounced by  Luther, she  develops a resonant new vision of the unfinished fugue.
